Helping Hands, Open Hearts, Service above Self

            Father Alex is always inspirational to me.  He represents someone who really acts on “service above self.”  I am awed.  It has been at least five years since we were part of sending a large shipping container to him in Peru.  In fact, I was a brand new member when the container was sent off.  International service is an area where we can also make a difference.  Have you all considered what you would like to be our next large international service project?  One way to find out about the District International Projects is to attend Conferences and Assemblies.  However, personal ideas and suggestions are always welcome.

            Of course international projects are very important, but there is an ongoing literacy project that needs some help, the Free Books.  The new administration at the Health Department would welcome our continuation of donating slightly used books to be given away.  I suspect most of us have cleared out our houses, but I hope you can give me ideas for places to find inexpensive books.  Any suggestion will be considered. Rotary Notes & Events

·        Today there will be a special event!

·         November 3 is the Rotary Foundation Celebration.  RSVP deadline is October 26^th.

·         November 10^th Nancy Rhodes will be giving out flu shots.  The timing is right before the season, so I’ll see you there.

On October 22^nd West Allis Rotary Club had our 6^th Annual Autumn Fundraiser, the 4^th time as a Wine and Beer tasting event.  It was a wonderful event at VMP (Village at Manor Park).  The setting was beautiful, the food again was amazing and the Wine and Beer provided by Steak House 100 was very intoxicating.  Jazz music performed by a trio lead by Jeff Dagenhardt filled the room.  Thanks to all the rotarians we had a very successful wine pull of over 55 bottles.  We also had great participation in both our 50/50 raffles thanks to both Jim Mejchar and Ann Affeldt who are great at pushing the tickets. 

We had a great silent auction which was all pulled together by Sue Zwitter and assisted by Karen Jasnewski.  Thank you Sue for getting all the bid sheets ready especially the ones you printed up just minutes before the event.  We had some great items and some equally great bids.

The results aren’t in at this time but judging by the great attendance and looking at the bid sheets I think our Foundation will be the beneficiary of funding to help those people in need in our area and elsewhere in the world.

Thank you to the following groups and individuals without whose support our event would not have been such a success.

A Special thank-you to Mark Ellington of D. C. Ellington for donating the printing of our tickets and flyers.

Another Special thank-you goes out to VMP for providing such a wonderful location for the event.

And a final thank-you to Layton State Bank for lending us the use of their credit card machine for the night, without which the night’s collection of donations would not be possible.

Superbowl Raffle Update!!!  I got an email explaining that the Brookfield Rotary Club is unable to sponsor the “Superbowl Raffle” for this year (next year they plan to have everything worked out).  I completely understand their need to get this all back in legal form, but it does leave us without a major fund raiser that usually nets our Club Foundation $2000 plus.  Personally, I never planned on winning, so it always was a donation. The Brookfield Rotary Club assures us that they will be up and running for the 2013 Superbowl, but we could all consider supporting our own Foundation with an extra donation for this year.  Any amount will help us continue to give the number of grants we usually give during the year.

Rotary Notes & Events

·         Our second Board Dinner together, is after the meeting on October 12, at Bunkers.

·         We will all want to be here on October 13, to welcome our own Nancy Rhodes, District 6270 Governor for her yearly visit.

·         October 22 is going to be a very busy day.  We all have the option of starting out with the District Assembly, at Hartford Middle School.  Advance registration would be appreciated.

·         In the evening we all have a chance for an exciting change of pace, Our Wine and Beer Tasting experience.
